Acne, Eczema, and Rashes: When to See Your Family Doctor for Skin Concerns

2 min read

Skin problems are among the most common reasons people visit the doctor, and they can affect confidence and comfort at any age. Many people assume they need to wait for a dermatology referral, but a family doctor can often help first.

Skin conditions your family doctor can help with

MacIsaac Family Medicine offers general dermatology services, including treatment for common conditions such as:

  • Acne, in teens and adults

  • Eczema and atopic dermatitis

  • Psoriasis

  • Poison ivy reactions and other irritating rashes

Dr. MacIsaac has a particular interest in dermatology as well as adolescent and teen medicine, which makes the practice a good fit for families dealing with teen acne.

When is it time to make an appointment?

  • Over-the-counter products haven't helped after a reasonable trial.

  • A rash is spreading, painful, or keeps coming back.

  • Itching interferes with sleep or daily activities.

  • Skin problems are affecting your child's or teen's confidence.

  • You notice a new mole or a change in an existing spot.

Seek urgent medical attention if a rash comes with trouble breathing, swelling of the face or lips, or a high fever. If you are unsure, call our office and we can help you decide on next steps.

Skin cancer screenings

A new or changing spot is a good reason to book a skin check. MacIsaac Family Medicine offers skin cancer screenings, and a visit is also a good time to ask about sun protection and which changes to watch for between appointments.

One office for the whole family

Because we care for patients ages 6 and up, parents and kids can often be seen on the same day. To schedule a skin visit, call us at 724.940.9190 or read about our full range of services on our homepage.
